What was a thrilling battle mere seconds ago suddenly turns into a grim execution as the player is forced to put Sif out of her misery, all while she continues to try and fight, refusing to let the player remain on the sacred ground of her master’s grave as long as she draws breath.Īs dedicated Souls fans know, you don’t have to kill every boss in a Souls game if you don’t want to. Normally, most bosses tend to start using new attacks or tactics when their health is low, but Sif….starts limping and whining in pain. However, if the player manages to reduce Sif’s health to a certain point, something unexpected happens. The location of Artorias’s tomb (the arena where you fight Sif) is also located deep in an idyllically quiet forest, casting an eerie sort of ominousness over the fight.ĭespite the fact that she’s holding a large, unwieldy looking greatsword in her mouth, Sif can actually be quite challenging to players who aren’t prepared, since she’s very fast, and the sword gives her attacks a deceptively long range. First off, you’re fighting a giant wolf, a giant wolf which isn’t content to just use her teeth and claws, oh no, she actually takes up the sword of her dead owner, a hero named Knight Artorias, and wields it by clutching the handle with her mouth. ![]() Right off the bat, there are several reasons why the fight against Sif stands out. A Cruel Yet Necessary Taskĭue to Dark Souls’ more open-ended nature, there really is no specific point when you have to fight Sif, but most players wind up fighting her about midway through the game’s “intended” sequence of events. Battling the Great Grey Wolf Sif can certainly conjure feelings of frustration and annoyance, but it can also conjure another, unexpected emotion: genuine sorrow. In From Software’s original Dark Souls, there’s one boss fight which, like virtually every boss fight in the Souls series, is difficult to be sure, but that’s not really why it’s remembered so vividly by fans. Constantly throwing yourself against a seemingly impossibly foe, only to be defeated time and time again can demoralize even the most stalwart gamers, especially when you come so close to achieving victory only to have it yanked away from you at the last second.
